Passion for Poetry

Poetry had always been Lena’s passion. As a young child in grammar school in a little country parish in France, she would make extra trips to the library to check out book after book of poetry. As she finished grammar school and was accepted to university, her passion never ceased. Her literature professor challenged her to stretch herself and try writing poetry as well, as he felt she would be a natural writer. It to Lena that if she was able to write poetry that would be of interest to younger children, more of them would find a passion for poetry themselves. With this goal as her inspiration, the words began to flow out of her. Her professor put her in contact with a publisher who was excited to have the opportunity to break into a new market. Lena decided to distribute books to all local grammar schools for free. One day when attending a reading at a country parish library, a big group of students poured in with their teacher. After sitting and listening attentively during the reading, the teacher brought the students to Lena to say hi. After surviving a torrent of excited young exclamations, Lena was approached by the teacher. The teacher explained that this was a class of 3rd year students who had fallen in love with her book of poetry. Many of the students come from impoverished homes and had been at least a grade level behind in class.  When Lena had decided to allow copies to be delivered to the schools for free, she had opened up a new opportunity to the students just as she had wanted.  The books opened their eyes to a new world, and they embraced it whole-heartedly.  With their new-found appreciation for learning, they started approaching all subjects with open minds and found that they themselves had many natural talents as well.  Their teacher and the principal had gone in together to purchase Lena a monogrammed necklace to thank her for influencing the young thinkers of today.
