This moving piece is from The Macclesfield Alphabet Book, assembled in the 15th century (and recently discovered in the ancient library of the Earl of Macclesfield), now in the British Museum of London, in England. The crucifix is actually the letter “V” from a 1464 illuminated manuscript alphabet contained in the book. The pendant features incredibly detailed handwork with an 18” sterling silver chain.

Wiping a tear with the back of her hand, she carefully wrapped up the gift for her precious son that would carry her love for him while he was in a foreign land. Having recently finished his training to become a member of the Swiss Guard, he was being sent with Pope Pius II to join the Crusades. Rumors of war were in the air, for surely, the Ottoman Empire would see this action as a direct violation of their treaty. As she packed the figure in his satchel, she prayed for Christ to protect her son.
