Wiping a tear with the back of her hand, she carefully wrapped up the gift that would carry her love with her precious son while he was in a forgein land.  Having recently finished his training to become a member of the Swiss Guard, he was being sent with Pope Pius II, to join the Crusades.  Rumors of war were in the air, for surely, the Ottoman Empire would see this action as a direct violation of their treaty.  As she packed the figure in his satchel, she prayed for Christ to protect her son.

This moving piece is from The Macclesfield Alphabet Book, found in the library of the Earl of Macclesfield, at the British Museum of London, in England.  It is the letter “V,” from a 1464 illuminated manuscript alaphbet.  The pendant features an attached, 18” long sterling silver chain and incredibly detailed handwork in this depiction of Jesus on the cross.
